Our client is a manufacturing company looking for an experienced Chief Accountant on interim base to support its operations.

CHIEF ACCOUNTANT - Interim

The Interim Chief Accountant will take full ownership of the accounting function, ensuring accurate, timely and compliant financial reporting, robust internal controls and efficient accounting operations. You will act as a trusted advisor to the CFO/MD and the executive team, providing clear insight into cost, margin and cash performance in a manufacturing environment.

THE JOB

• Accounting leadership & reporting

  • Lead the accounting department and ensure timely, accurate month-end and year-end close.

  • Oversee preparation of statutory and management accounts, including balance sheet, P&L, cash flow and key KPIs.

  • Ensure compliance with local GAAP / IFRS, tax and regulatory requirements.

  • Act as primary contact for external auditors and coordinate annual audit and statutory filings.ziprecruiter+2

  Cost accounting & manufacturing finance

  • Own cost accounting, standard costing and variance analysis for production.

  • Monitor inventory valuation, cycle counts and write-offs; ensure accurate WIP and finished-goods accounting.

  • Analyse product and customer profitability, production variances and manufacturing efficiency.

  • Partner with operations and supply chain to improve margins, reduce waste and optimise working capital.ziprecruiter+2

  Controls, compliance & risk

  • Review and strengthen internal controls over financial reporting, procurement, inventory and cash.

  • Ensure compliance with tax, VAT, transfer pricing and other statutory obligations.

  • Identify and mitigate financial and operational risks; ensure audit readiness at all times.ziprecruiter+1

  Cash & working capital

  • Oversee accounts payable, accounts receivable and treasury activities.

  • Drive cash forecasting, liquidity planning and working-capital improvement initiatives (DSO, DPO, inventory turns).

  • Manage banking relationships and covenant reporting where applicable.ziprecruiter+1

  Process improvement & systems

  • Assess and improve accounting processes, policies and workflows.

  • Support ERP optimisation or implementation (e.g. SAP, Oracle, Microsoft Dynamics) and financial reporting systems.

  • Introduce automation and standardisation to increase efficiency and data quality.ziprecruiter+2

  Team & stakeholder management

  • Lead, coach and develop the accounting team; ensure clear roles, responsibilities and performance standards.

  • Provide clear, actionable financial information to the CFO/MD, plant managers and commercial leaders.

  • Support special projects such as restructuring, carve-outs, M&A integration or new site set-up as required

THE PERSON

• Comfortable stepping into a complex environment and delivering quick, visible impact.

• Strong change-management and stakeholder-management skills.

• Able to work independently, prioritize effectively and operate under time pressure.

• Experience in interim, turnaround or transformation roles is highly desirable

• Degree in Accounting, Finance or related field; professional qualification (e.g. ACCA, CPA, CMA, local equivalent) strongly preferred.

• 10+ years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 5 years in a manufacturing environment.

• Proven track record as Chief Accountant / Accounting Director / Head of Accounting or similar.

• Deep knowledge of cost accounting, inventory accounting and standard costing in manufacturing.

• Strong understanding of local GAAP / IFRS, tax and statutory reporting in Hungary

• Experience leading and developing accounting teams in a multi-site or international setting is a plus.

• Advanced Excel skills; hands-on experience with major ERP systems (SAP, Oracle, Dynamics, etc.).

• Fluent in English;
